ACS on Campus is attending IUPAC 2017 - 46th World Chemistry Conference in São Paulo, Brazil! Join us for a publishing panel and Meet-the-Editors journal reception on Monday, July 10 from 12:00-14:00 in the WTC Events Center,  São Paulo Room. During the panel, you'll learn how to prepare a strong manuscript, choose the best journal for your research, and prepare a cover letter that will get the attention of the editors. After, you'll network with the ACS Editors over refreshments and take home ACS Publications flip-flops, exclusive to IUPAC.

Registration is not required but recommended to guarantee your spot! Space is limited.

Featured Panelists:

Prof. Norbert John Pienta, Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Chemical Education
Prof. Krishna Ganesh, Editor, ACS Omega
Prof. Dean Tantillo, Associate Editor, ACS Omega
Prof. Matthew Sigman, Associate Editor, Journal of the American Chemical Society

Moderator:

Dr. Tamara Hanna, Senior Acquisitions Editor, ACS Publications

Speakers

Krishna Ganesh, Ph.D.

Editor, ACS Omega

Professor Krishna Ganesh, Ph.D., is the Director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, India, and a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences in Bangalore, the Indian National Science Academy in New Delhi, and The World Academy of Sciences . Professor Ganesh has won numerous awards including the C.N.R. Rao Sastra Award in Chemical Sciences and the Firodia Award for Chemical Sciences. Ganesh is an expert in modified DNA and peptide-nucleic acids as novel cell penetrating agents.

Dean J. Tantillo, PhD

Associate Editor, ACS Omega

Dean J. Tantillo was born and raised in Quincy, Massachusetts, USA. After earning an A.B. degree in Chemistry in 1995 from Harvard and a Ph.D. in 2000 from UCLA (working with Ken Houk), he carried out postdoctoral research with Roald Hoffmann at Cornell. He joined the Department of Chemistry at UC Davis in 2003, where he is currently a Professor of Chemistry. Dean loves to stew on the origins of unexpected structures and mechanisms in the areas of catalysis, biosynthesis, reactive intermediate chemistry, stereoselectivity and weak non-covalent interactions. Dean and the group of graduate students, undergraduate researchers and postdoctoral researchers with whom he works apply the tools of theoretical chemistry to problems in mechanistic bioorganic chemistry, chemical biology, natural products biosynthesis and structure elucidation, and mechanisms of organic and organometallic reactions of synthetic relevance.

Norb Pienta, PhD

Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Chemical Education

Norb Pienta is currently Professor of Chemistry and Director of General Chemistry Instruction at the University of Georgia and serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Chemical Education.  Born and raised in Buffalo, he went on to earn a BS in chemistry from the University of Rochester (1974) and PhD at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (1978), studying synthetic and mechanistic implications of organic photochemisty. Subsequently, he completed postdoctoral work with Ned Arnett at the University of Pittsburgh and Duke University (1978-80).  Pienta began his first academic appointment at the Univ. of Arkansas, Fayetteville in 1980, where he earned tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor studying physical organic chemistry.  He moved back to UNC in 1989, where he developed curriculum for all of the undergraduate labs and began a career in chemical education research.  In 1999, he moved to the Univ. of Iowa, where he redesigned the general chemistry curriculum and conducted scholarship and research; he was promoted to professor in 2008 and began as editor of JCE in 2009.  In 2012, he moved to his current position at the University of Georgia where he studies student problem solving, the use of technology in lecture and the laboratories, and student interpretation of chemical representations.

Tamara Hanna, Ph.D.

Dr. Tammy Hanna, Acquisitions Editor, Editorial Development, American Chemical Society

Dr. Tammy Hanna received a B.S. in Chemistry from Harvey Mudd College in 2002. In 2006, she earned her Ph.D. from Cornell University, working with Dr. Paul Chirik on the activation and functionalization of dinitrogen by group 4 metals. Dr. Hanna completed post-doctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley with Dr. Chris Chang, where she studied hydrogenase mimics. Following a 3.5 year appointment at Texas Tech University as an Instructor of Chemistry and Director of the Welch Summer Scholar Program, Dr. Hanna joined the American Chemical Society in 2011, where she worked as the Managing Editor of Inorganic Chemistry and Journal of Organic Chemistry. Dr. Hanna was recently promoted to Acquisitions Editor, where she is responsible for the strategic development and management of a portfolio of 9 journals in the fields of inorganic, organic and materials chemistry.
