Speakers

Kirk Schanze, Ph.D.

Editor-in-Chief, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces

Kirk Schanze is Professor of Chemistry and Chairman of the Organic Chemistry Division at the University of Florida. In addition, he is a Panel Member for the Research Associateship Program of the National Research Council. Dr. Schanze’s laboratory investigates the interaction of light with organic and organometallic materials. Specifically, the laboratory is developing state-of-the-science optical applications such as light emitting devices, fluorescent sensors, solar energy conversion, and non-linear optical phenomena.  In addition, Dr. Schanze has conducted considerable research on the development of thin film-based luminescent oxygen sensor materials to measure air pressure distributions in wind tunnel models.

Ellen Fisher, Ph.D.

Professor of Chemistry, Colorado State University; Senior Faculty Advisor to the Vice President for Research; Executive Editor of ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces

Ellen Fisher is a Professor of Analytical, Physical, and Materials Chemistry and Chair of the Department of Chemistry at Colorado State University (CSU), serving as Department Chair from 2009-2014. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Texas Lutheran University (formerly College) in 1986 (summa cum laude) and a Ph.D. in physical-analytical chemistry from the University of Utah in 1991. After two years as a postdoctoral member of the technical staff at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, she joined the faculty at CSU in 1993.

Dr. Fisher has published over 140 original peer-reviewed articles that span diverse topics in plasma science, materials chemistry, chemistry education and the responsible conduct of research. She has served on the editorial boards of several technical journals in her field and is currently an Executive Editor of the American Chemical Society journal ACS-Applied Materials and Interfaces.

Deqing Zhang, PhD

Co-Editor, ACS Omega

Professor Deqing Zhang, Ph.D., is the Director of the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. Trained as an organic chemist, Professor Zhang’s research focuses on organic functional materials involving synthesis of organic functional molecules, spectroscopic studies, characterizations of self-assembly structures and optoelectronic properties, as well as applications for chemo-/biosensing and imaging.

Jun Lu, PhD

Associate Editor, ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces

Dr. Jun Lu is a chemist at Argonne National Laboratory. His research interests focus on the electrochemical energy storage and conversion technology, with main focus on beyond Li-ion battery technology. Dr. Lu earned his bachelor degree in Chemistry Physics from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2000. He completed his Ph.D. from the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at University of Utah in 2009 with a major research on metal hydrides for reversible hydrogen storage application. He is the awardee of the first DOE-EERE postdoctoral fellow under Vehicles Technology Program from 2011-2013. He is also the first awardee of IAOEES Award for Research Excellence in Electrochemistry Energy in 2016. He is the associate editor of ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. Dr. Lu has authored/co-authored more than 170 peer-reviewed research articles, including Nature; Nature Energy, Nature Nanotechnology; Chem. Rev.; Nature Commun.; JACS; etc, and has filed over 20 patents and patent applications.

Feng Chen, PhD

Publications Division, American Chemical Society

Dr. Feng Chen received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Peking University, a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School. She spent almost a decade at Cell Press-Elsevier, as Editor-in-Chief of Molecular Cell and Executive Editor of the Molecular Biology Portfolio overseeing two additional review titles, Trends in Biochemical Sciences and Trends in Genetics. She then joined Harvard University as Director of Research Affairs for the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. At the American Chemical Society, she is responsible for the strategic development and editorial management of a multidisciplinary portfolio of ACS Publications, including Journal of the American Chemical Society, Chemical Reviews, Accounts of Chemical Research, ACS Nano, Nano Letters, and other distinguished titles in agricultural and food, energy and environmental science, and chemical education. She also plays a leading role in the development of Strategic Partnerships in China, Asia and beyond. In addition, Dr. Chen serves on the Journals Committee of Professional & Scholarly Publishing, Association of American Publishers.
