ACS on Campus at IUPAC

Dr. João Borges is a Senior Researcher at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Porto in 2013. From 2013 to 2018, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Minho and University of Aveiro. His research focuses on the molecular design, synthesis and development of supramolecular multicomponent biomaterials to interface with living systems. He is author of original research articles, review papers, editorial, essay, comment, and viewpoint articles published in high impact journals including Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Chemical Reviews, Nature Chemistry, Angewandte Chemie, Chemical Science, and Journal of the American Chemical Society, magazine articles published in ChemistryViews and Chemistry International, and has edited one book on soft matter for biomedical applications. In 2019, he was distinguished by IUPAC as an outstanding early-career chemist, being featured in the Periodic Table of Younger Chemists. He has been actively engaged in science communication and has been lecturing on communication and presentation skills at the University of Aveiro. Moreover, he has been strongly devoted to delivering a positive social impact by being widely involved in science outreach and public engagement activities aiming to advance the dissemination and understanding of chemistry and its impact to the betterment of humankind. João has been also actively serving and embracing leadership roles in several early-career chemists’ networks and professional scientific organizations at national, European and international levels, extensively supporting the networking activities among and empowering early-career chemists in their professional development. He has been a Co-Chair and Board Member of the Young Chemists Group (GQJ) of the Portuguese Chemical Society (SPQ), Portuguese Delegate and Member of the Networks and Global Connections Teams at the European Young Chemists’ Network (EYCN), and Conference Presence Committee Leader, Vice-Chair and Chair of the International Younger Chemists Network (IYCN). Currently, he is Past Chair and Advisor of the IYCN, and Task Group Chair of the IYCN/IUPAC joint project Global Conversation on Sustainability which aims to tackle the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by raising awareness and implementing sustainable practices globally. João is a member of SPQ, ACS, European Society for Biomaterials, and Affiliate Member of IUPAC.

Angela K. Wilson is a John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives, and Director of the Center for Quantum Computing, Science, and Engineering (MSU-Q) at Michigan State University.  She earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Eastern Washington University and her Ph.D. in chemical physics from the University of Minnesota.  She was a postdoctoral fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.  From 2016-2018, she led the Division of Chemistry at the National Science Foundation.  She has been a member of ACS since 1989, and served as ACS President in 2022.
