Carlos A. Nieto de Castro, Ph.D.

Professor, Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon
Carlos A. Nieto de Castro was born in Portugal in 1949. Full Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon since 1980, jubilated in 2019. Studied Chemical Engineering, and obtained his PhD in Engineering Sciences (Chemical Thermodynamics) from Instituto Superior Técnico, Portugal (1977). Received the Portuguese Stimulus to Excellence in Research Award, FCT-MCTES, Portugal (2005), the University of Lisbon Medal for distinguished service and has about 400 scientific publications including 38 books and chapters, one European patent and 550 conference presentations. He directed over 40 national and international funded projects, part of them involving industrial companies. Member of several international scientific boards and learning societies, he is an international evaluator under European, National, and International programs, associate editor of the Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data (ACS), editorial board member of several journals, and IUPAC fellow. Prof. Carlos Nieto de Castro is one of world’s most cited top scientists in Chemical Engineering/Physical Chemistry (top 2%), Stanford University Ranking, US, 2020, 2021. With more than 45 years dedicated to the research in thermodynamics and transport processes of fluids and materials, his actual scientific activity covers the field of molecular thermophysics and fluid technology, ionic liquids, molten salts, nanofluids, ionanofluids and nanosystems, including new heat and storage fluids with industrial impact in the areas of energy and environment, and the use of ionic liquids as solvating and reaction media to synthesize and functionalize nanomaterials, for industrial and domestic applications.
Sofiem Garmendia, Ph.D.
Manager, Customer Success, CAS
As the South Europe Academic Customer Success Manager for CAS, Sofiem leverages his expertise as a polymer specialist to help researchers leverage chemical and patent search software like SciFinder-n. He has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Warwick and the Université de Bordeaux, and is currently based in Spain. Sofiem’s expertise includes polymer chemistry, formulation, organic / inorganic / analytical chemistry, patents, IP, market needs, cost/ROI, big data treatment, academia relationship, (key) accounts management, SaaS, chemistry software, publications & scientific articles, R&D training, decision making tools, increasing performance, analytical methods, metrics study, customer loyalty, IA system management, communication, communication & more communication for a full customer experience.
Christopher LaPrade, MA
Senior Manager, Global Engagement, ACS Membership
Christopher LaPrade is the Senior Manager for Global Engagement in the ACS Membership Division. In this role, Christopher works to develop ACS’s international collaboration efforts with U.S. and foreign government entities, partner chemical societies, institutes and multilateral organizations worldwide. Prior to joining ACS in 2014, Christopher worked in a similar role at the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) building global partnerships and institutional capacity in emerging scientific communities and worked in higher education in Aachen, Germany. Christopher resides in Washington, D.C. and holds an M.A. in International Business & Policy from Georgetown University.
Monica Azulay, MA
EMEA Account Manager, CAS
Monica joined the ACSI sales team based in Oxford in July 2014. Alongside her Regional Sales Manager reponsibilities in the EMEA region, Monica represents the ACS internationally, fostering the relationship between the ACS and their end-users, authors, customers and stakeholders. She is strongly committed to bringing the ACS closer to the scientific community outside the USA and she fully engages at every opportunity in outreach events such as ACS on Campus.
Joerg Schlatterer, Ph.D.
Assistant Director, Education, Student and Postdoctoral Development
Joerg Schlatterer, Ph.D., is the Assistant Director for Student and Postdoctoral Development, in the ACS Education Division. Prior to joining ACS, he served as a program director in the NSF Division of Graduate Education in Arlington, VA. Dr. Schlatterer received his Ph.D. from the University of Heidelberg. He loves dancing Argentine Tango, playing music, and taking long walks with his wife, Sarah.
