Featured Speakers
Michael Monteiro, Ph.D.
Associate Editor, Biomacromolecules
Prof. Michael J. Monteiro is a Senior Group Leader within the AIBN at The University of Queensland, Australia. He completed his PhD at Griffith University, Australia, on nitroxide trapping of small radical intermediates in polymerization systems. His first Postdoctoral Fellowship was with Prof. Ken O’Driscoll at the University of Waterloo, Canada, on determining the effects of solvent on kp by PLP. His next Postdoctoral Fellowship was with Prof. Anton German at Eindhoven University of Technology. He then was recruited as the Scientific Officer at the University of Sydney, Australia with Professor Bob Gilbert, working on emulsion polymerization. In 1999, he was an Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, where he started with ‘living’ radical polymerization using RAFT. His group was the first to study and synthesize polymer nanoparticles in water with controlled composition and morphology using the RAFT technology. He worked with Professor Virgil Percec (University of Pennsylvania) in 2001 on SET-LRP. In 2002, Monteiro returned to Australia to work at Gradipore Pty LtD on developing new membranes for protein separation. In 2004, he was awarded an ARC QEII Fellowship at UQ; in 2009 he was awarded an ARC Future Fellowship; and in 2015 he was awarded a UQ Vice Chancellor Fellowship. Monteiro has published over 250 peer reviewed publications and book chapters, and is on the Advisory Boards of Biomacromolecules (2013-2018), Macromolecules (2009-2011), Journal of Polymer Science Part A Polymer Chemistry (2009-), European Polymer Journal and Heliyon – both journal published by Elsevier Ltd. He is currently an Assistant Editor for Biomacromolecules (ACS, 2018- ).
Ruirui Qiao, Ph.D.
Topic Editor of ACS Polymer Science & Technology.
Dr Ruirui Qiao is a Group Leader and NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow in Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN), The University of Queensland (UQ). She earned her PhD from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2014, along with an MSc in 2007 and a BSc in 2005 from Peking University, China. Leading a research group at AIBN, UQ, she is committed to advancing the field of functional polymer/inorganic nanohybrids for biomedical applications, including disease diagnosis, drug/gene delivery, tissue engineering, antibacterial solutions, and soft robotics. So far, she has published >130 refereed journal articles including Science, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, ACS Nano, and JACS, with an H-index of 50 and >8500 citations. Among others, she currently serves as the associate editor for Science Advances (AAAS), Journal of Nanobiotechnology (Spring Nature) and Topic Editor of ACS Polymer Science & Technology.
